Frequently Asked Questions

Who is BayREN?
BayREN, the “Bay Area Regional Energy Network,” is a collaboration of the nine counties that make up the San Francisco Bay Area—Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties. Led by the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG), BayREN provides regional-scale energy efficiency programs, services, and resources.
Who is Lime Energy?
Lime Energy is the sole BayREN Business Program contractor working on behalf of BayREN.
Why is BayREN offering this program?
The BayREN Business program offers eligible small and medium businesses the opportunity to retrofit existing inefficient equipment with more energy-efficient measures, making it easier to save energy and money. The program provides turnkey services including energy assessments, submission of all paperwork, ordering of materials, arranging of a contractor aligned with your schedule, and removal and recycling of old materials.
How do I know if I qualify for this program?
An Energy Advisor will guide you every step of the way, including eligibility screening. The items listed below are the primary criteria for eligibility:
• Existing PG&E nonresidential customer on a qualifying electric tariff (A-1, A-6, A10, E-19, or E-20)
• Annual energy usage less than 500,000 kWh or 250,000 Therms
• Must have at least 12 months of continuous electric and gas “smart meter” data that meets program requirements. This includes no previous public purpose program-funded incentives in the past 12 months.
• Site must have sufficient opportunity for improvement.
I’m not a business. I am calling from a church/non-profit/school. Are we still eligible?
Yes, if your facility meets the eligibility criteria stated above, there is still an opportunity to participate. If your facility is a municipal building, please contact us for a referral to programs specific to government buildings.
Do I need an energy assessment if I already know what work I need to have completed at my facility?
Yes, the energy assessment is designed to provide program-specific recommendations based on your business type and operating hours. The assessment will provide you with unique information that will help make the right improvements for your business. The energy assessment is no cost to the customer.
What types of energy-efficiency improvements are offered through BayREN Business?
BayREN Business currently provides solutions for select lighting, HVAC, and refrigeration improvements. The Energy Advisor can provide you with more detail on the specific improvements that are available during their initial site visit.
If I want to use my own contractor, what do I do?
In order to take advantage of the BayREN Business program, you must use Lime Energy, our single dedicated partner for both energy assessments and installations.
What impact will the installation process have on my customers or employees?
Project installations are scheduled on a day and time of your choosing in order to have little or no impact on your customers and employees.
How is BayREN Business funded?
BayREN programs receive authorization from the California Public Utilities Commission to use public purpose program (PPP) funds to provide incentives to customers who pursue qualifying energy efficiency projects. Customers who receive a bill from PG&E pay into PPP every month. A breakdown can be found under “Your Electric Charges Breakdown” on page 2 of your electric billing statement.
How is the incentive applied to the total cost of the project?
The incentive is based on the estimated energy savings that will result from the recommended measures. The incentive amount from BayREN is applied upfront as a discount on the total cost of the energy efficiency project.
Do all projects qualify for $0 out of pocket (SAVE™ Option)?
An energy assessment and eligibility screening is needed to determine if (a) you meet program requirements and (b) if you are eligible for SAVE™, which requires no money out of pocket and allows your savings to pay for the cost of the installation. Sites that do not qualify for SAVE™ may still be able to participate with the help of competitive pricing and financing mechanisms (or out of pocket).
How do you know or guarantee the savings?
We will install small devices on the circuit breakers to measure the savings every month. This way we both know what savings are realized every month.
